Sora 2 has been shut down: what happened and what to use instead

Update, October 3, 2026: OpenAI shut down Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro on September 24, 2026. Generation on NeuralBox is no longer available. Don't top up your balance for Sora: requests are rejected before any tokens are charged. Below is the model's story and the working alternatives.

In April OpenAI switched off consumer access to Sora with little explanation: sora.com and the iOS app stopped working, even for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. The model stayed only in the API for developers. NeuralBox users were still generating Sora through API channels at that point. On September 24 OpenAI shut those down too.

What happened to Sora

OpenAI shut down the Sora app and web version on April 26, 2026. The official reason was a shift of focus to the API: access to the model remained for developers who had integrated /v1/videos into their own product.

NeuralBox was one of those products, and Sora kept working here until September. On September 24, 2026 OpenAI shut down Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro in the API as well. Sora generation is no longer available anywhere, including NeuralBox.

What Sora 2 was

Sora 2 made video with synchronized audio: characters talked, footsteps landed in time, the background felt alive. Its strengths were realistic physics (water, fabric, collisions) and complex scenes with several characters.

Clips were 4, 8 or 12 seconds long, from text or from a photo. The Pro version gave maximum detail and Full HD.

What to use instead

Video with audio from text or photos is now made by other models. The price of every generation is shown before you run it.

ByteDance's video model: multi-shot scenes with camera cuts, from text, a photo or a video reference.

How to try an alternative

Sign in with Telegram, Google or email, top up your balance (from $5 by card, from $2 in crypto) and open the Video tab. Choose Veo 3.1, Seedance or Kling and describe the scene together with the sound — for example: "Two friends arguing over chess in a park, one says 'Checkmate', laughter, city noise."
